Makabayan bloc wants probe on police ‘rescue’ of minors in Cebu By ANNA FELICIA BAJO, GMA News Published February 17, 2021 11:00am The House Makabayan bloc on Wednesday filed a resolution condemning and seeking to look into the police operation in Cebu City that supposedly rescued minors, belonging to the Manobo tribe, from communist rebels. In filing House Resolution 1590, members of the progressive group urged the House Committee on Human Rights to condemn and look into the incident. The violent raid and arrest conducted by the police against indigenous people merely seeking sanctuary amid the pandemic is highly condemnable, the resolution stated.

Cebu school says Lumad children supposedly rescued by police had permission from parents

Published February 17, 2021, 2:32 PM CEBU CITY – The presence of the Lumad children from Davao del Norte in a retreat house of a university here had the permission of their parents. This was the claim of the Save Our Schools (SOS) Network Cebu, which facilitated the Lumad children’s stay in Cebu as members of the Lumad Bakwit school. University of the Philippines-Cebu Professor Regletto Imbong, convenor of Save of Schools (SOS) Network-Cebu, alleged that the continued destruction of ancestral lands and the purported abuses suffered by Lumads for being the source of recruitment of the New People’s Army forced them to flee from their communities.

Romero calls for probe on violent police rescue of children at Cebu university

(JUAN CARLOS DE VELA / MANILA BULLETIN) IN a privilege speech Romero decried the  “excessive force and inhumane treatment” that children that children endured during a supposed ‘rescue operation” staged by police operatives at the University of San Carlos campus on Monday. Romero’s concern over the minors were shared by a number of congressmen who were likewise aghast at the way members of the Police Regional Office 7 conducted their operation. Romero called for a congressional inquiry into the incident.  He said that the deplorable result of the raid emphasizes the need to swiftly put in place Standard Operating Procedures in the conduct of police operations involving minors or staged in the presence of children.
