A man died, and a teen boy was rescued Sunday after a car drove off a bridge and crashed into the Calumet River on Sunday in Hegewisch
on the Far South Side.
Witnesses told officers about 6:50 p.m., a man drove his white sedan through a retention net in the 12400 block of South Torrence Avenue and went into the Calumet River as the bridge was going up, Chicago police said.
A 16-year-old boy was rescued by a passing boat, and police took him to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, police said.
The driver, a 38-year-old man, was also taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not yet identified him.

CHICAGO (CBS) At least 55 people were shot across Chicago over the weekend, 12 of them fatally, including a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head on the front porch of a home in Lawndale, and three double homicides.
Dajon Gater, 15, was on the front porch of a home in the 3900 block of West Lexington Street around 11:50 p.m. Friday, when two people approached him, pulled out guns, and started shooting, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
He was rushed to the Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition but died a few hours later.

Other homicides: Early Monday, a 56-year-old man was shot to death in West Garfield Park. Officers found the man unresponsive with a gunshot wound to neck about 1:30 a.m. in the 4500 block of West Maypole Avenue, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name hasn’t been released. On Sunday night, two men were found fatally shot in Bronzeville on the South Side. About 8:40 p.m., they were found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds inside a car in the 4600 block of South Federal Street, police said. The 49-year-old man and 56-year-old man were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
