The war against illegal mining has been given a boost with the immediate suspension of all reconnaissance and prospecting in forest reserves.
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which issued the directive, said all persons and companies engaged in those activities, with or without legal authorisation, should suspend them until further notice.
It has also directed the Minerals Commission not to, with immediate effect, accept, process and recommend the granting, including renewal and extension, of reconnaissance and prospecting licences in forest reserves.
The directive, signed by the sector Minister,Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor Thursday [April 22, 2021, declared: “For the avoidance of doubt, except as directed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in writing, all activities and operations in respect of any reconnaissance and/or prospecting licences in forest reserves are hereby suspended until further notice.”

Discussants at a plenary session of the National Consultative Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining have identified the lack of enforcement of laws against unregulated mining as one of the key factors responsible for illegal mining across the country.
They said influence in the work of institutions regulating the mining sector was another factor.
The discussants were a representative of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Nii Laryea Sowah; a representative of the Ministerial Committee to Develop a Blueprint for Small Scale Mining, Mr Benjamin Aryee; the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Minerals Commission, Mr Martin Ayisi; the Finance Director of the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners and the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Mr Suleman Koney.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has begun the construction of a multi-purpose lecture theatre to support teaching and research at University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Tarkwa in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Mr Sulemanu Koney, said the project was the first major project of the Chamber’s Tertiary Education Fund (TEF) to help create a more conducive ambiance for research and learning.
Speaking at the ceremony at Tarkwa, Mr Koney said the estimated cost of the project was $1.21 million and should be ready within two years.

A beneficiary of the Education Minister’s Engineering Scholarship has extended a touching birthday message to the Minister and MP for Bosomtwe in the Ashanti region, Hon. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The student, who is currently studying at the University of Mines and Technology appreciated Hon. Yaw Osei Adutwum and expressed how precious and useful the scholarship programme is to him.
It would be recalled that the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, earlier this year, granted full self-sponsored scholarships to 30 young people in his constituency to pursue Engineering programmes at the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) in Tarkwa.
