Consumer champion Raymond Ackerman celebrates his 90th birthday By Supplied Share On March 10, 1931 a man was born who would change the face of South African retail. Raymond Ackerman would grow up to become one of South Africa’s most loved business personalities, affectionately known and widely respected for his passion for consumer rights and for always fighting for what he believed was right. His father Gus co-founded the Ackermans chain after World War I. Raymond Ackerman built up local and international expertise to become one of the country’s most successful retailers. After a few setbacks in his career – including being fired from Checkers in 1966 – Ackerman, with the support of his wife Wendy, leapt into entrepreneurship and purchased the Pick n Pay supermarket group consisting of just four stores in Cape Town from Jack Goldin in 1967.

Sesona Ngqakamba Share The Department of Higher Education says it will assist students still in need of places.  The department has also extended the registration period for first year students due to delays in NSFAS concluding their funding eligibility.  Higher education and training institutions have received thousands of applications, in excess of the available spaces for various programmes. Universities across the country are gearing up for the 2021 academic year following a challenging 2020 amid Covid-19. On Monday, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Blade Nzimande announced that registration for first-time students would be extended by two weeks due to delays in the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) confirming funding eligibility.
