Texas COVID-19 vaccine rollout slow, uneven

One week after health authorities in Abilene had created a sign-up list for people eligible for the COVID-19 vaccines, the waiting list was 3,500 names long. A mass vaccination clinic at a livestock showgrounds in the Rio Grande Valley city of Mercedes reached capacity by 6 a.m. Tuesday after 800 people waited in line in cars overnight. And in Travis County, Black elected officials say they are concerned that Austin-area vaccine distribution plans which hinge on getting out vaccines through grocery stores and pharmacies leave poor communities of color miles from vaccination sites. An American-Statesman examination of the vaccine rollout across the state shows that even as 1.5 million doses of vaccine have been shipped to Texas, an uneven system of distribution has led to bottlenecks and concerns about access.
