Gov Greg Abbott to get the COVID-19 vaccine in a news event Tuesday

Aiming to encourage Texans to take coronavirus vaccines as they become available, Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday that he will receive a vaccine in Austin on Tuesday. The public vaccination news cameras will be on hand at Ascension Seton Medical Center echoes an event on Friday in which Vice President Mike Pence received a vaccine shot before journalists. The governor s announcement comes as the number of COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals continues to rise, surpassing 10,000 on Monday for the first time since July 24. The pandemic high was 10,893 hospitalizations on July 22. Abbott s promotion of the vaccine points to what could be a struggle among Texas officials to persuade large numbers of Texans to get vaccinated against the disease. Scientists say at least 75% of people must be vaccinated to reach what is known as herd immunity.

COVID-19: Vaccine Could end the Pandemic but Millions will Skip it

COVID Vaccine Could End Pandemic but Millions Will Skip It Although the numbers appear to have improved since drugmakers Pfizer and Moderna reported their impressive trial results last month, about 40 percent of Americans tell poll takers they don t plan to get a COVID vaccine. by Todd Ackerman, Houston Chronicle / December 14, 2020 TNS (TNS) - Derrick Broze, a self-described non-vaxxer, harbors no desire to get the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes widely available.   The Pfizer vaccine, expected to arrive in some Houston-area hospitals Monday, may constitute the world s best hope for ending the coronavirus pandemic that has killed nearly 300,000 Americans, but Broze sees it differently: He doesn t want to be a science experiment for a vaccine against a virus that has a very high survival rate.
