New Carousel Theatre at UT named in honor of Jenny Boyd

Plans have been in the works for several years to replace the existing Carousel, which dates to the 1950s and started with the intent of being a temporary structure. The venue is a sentimental favorite among audiences, but it s aging and has limited and primitive accommodations for actors backstage and can become cramped when trying to put on a play with a larger cast. Recent shows there have included People Where They Are, Hamlet and Detroit 67. The new structure will remain small and intimate but it ll be up-to-date technologically and able to accommodate the demands of productions in the 21st century.

Tennessee House passes bill to allow use of state and local taxes on Knoxville stadium project

The Tennessee Senate is set to vote on the bill Wednesday. Author: WBIR Staff Updated: 9:30 PM EDT April 27, 2021 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A bill meant to help pay for a new $65 million baseball stadium in downtown Knoxville was passed in the Tennessee House of Representatives Tuesday. The bill would allow the local government to capture and use state and local sales tax collected in the area around the proposed stadium. Officials said that the money taken from sales tax could help cover up to 30% of the construction costs. State Senator Becky Duncan Massey introduced the legislation along with Representative Jason Zachary. Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs testified to support the legislation and said that it must pass for the project to move forward. He said that stadium would create more than 3,000 jobs and would not add a tax burden on residents.

Global IT firm expected to move into downtown county office building

Company officials indicated a preference for being downtown, Caldwell said at the time. The county was happy to oblige. The county recently acquired Summer Place at 500 Summit Hill Drive for about $1.6 million from TVA. It was part of a deal that allowed the county to become a long-term tenant in TVA s nearby East Tower for school system space and for University of Tennessee System space. CGI intends to open an information tech delivery center here, gradually hiring with a target of 300 personnel in five years. It will be CGI s eighth IT delivery and support center in the U.S. The average starting salary for an early career professional in Knoxville will be $60,000 annually, according to Alison Hallett, vice president of CGI s U.S. marketing communications.
