Indigenous Leader, Public Health Doctor Among Order of Canada Recipients

SHARE ON: The Canadian flag (Photo credit: supplied) An Ontario indigenous leader and a public health doctor are among the 61 appointments to the Order of Canada, announced December 30th by Governor-General Julie Payette. Carolyn King is a former chief of the Mississauga of the Credit First Nation. She’s been appointed an officer of the Order, the second-highest level. King has worked for years to improve the quality of life in her community through an economic development program for her First Nation. Doctor Vivek Goel has been appointed a member of the order for his work in public health. He’s a professor at the University of Toronto’s School of Public Health, and sits on the Ontario COVID-19 task force. Goel was the founding president of Public Health Ontario from 2008 to 2014, created in the wake of the SARS outbreak in 2003.
