Various Associates Subverts Department Store Conventions for a Boutique in Qingdao

Two years ago, Various Associates scooped up the fashion retail prize at
Interior Design’s Best of Year Awards for SND, a department store in Chongqing, China. Its austere symmetry, dominated by a pyramidal superstructure that appeared beamed down by some alien life form or perhaps carved by ancient gods was a smash hit with the public. It also caught the eye of the owner of J1M5 Boutique, a high-end, multibrand womens wear store, who tapped VA to design an outpost in a shopping mall in Qingdao, on China’s east coast.

Online learning saw significant growth during the pandemic, which helped validate a practice that already existed and forced fashion design schools to innovate their teaching methods. And while there are (increasingly) entire degree programs available to take online, there are also shorter certificate programs and individual courses that anyone can take for a few hundred bucks.
Founded by father-daughter duo Nakkyun Chong and Ji Hyun Chong, the Giftiicon app enables users to send a gift of their choice in just 30 seconds through SMS and WhatsApp without necessarily knowing the address of the recipient.

Unusually for a graphic designer, Ken Garland, who has died aged 92 of cancer, was not afraid to broadcast his political views. An influential practitioner, inspiring teacher, photographer, writer and performer at design conferences, he was also a lifelong socialist and an avid supporter of CND.
He belonged, as the design historian Robin Kinross has noted, to “the first generation of fully fledged graphic designers in Britain”, one of a number of graduates from the Central School of Arts and Crafts (now part of the University of the Arts London) who made a substantial impact in the second half of the 20th century.
