In a statement on Sunday, May 16, UP OSR said it initiated a donation drive to help those affected by the PGH fire.
“It is a practice of the OSR to support those ravaged by calamities with donation drives and partnerships with other efforts,” UP OSR said.
“As an institution within the UP System, the OSR offers its time and resources to assist all efforts related to relief, rehabilitation, and response whenever disasters and calamities arise in different parts of the country,” it added.
UP OSR said it is open to partner with institutions and organizations inside and outside the university “to widen the scope of aid that can be provided to those affected.”

Cebu, Mindanao state universities open medicine programs to scholars
Cebu Normal University-Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (CNU-VSMMC) and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) have been granted permission to offer the doctor of medicine program beginning schoolyear 2021-2022.
Cebu Normal University-Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (CNU-VSMMC) and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) will start offering doctor of medicine programs in the next school year after receiving approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
The CNU-VSMMC and WMSU join eight state universities offering doctor of medicine programs, including the University of Northern Philippines, Mariano Marcos State University, Cagayan State University, Bicol University, West Visayas State University, University of the Philippines Manila School of Health Sciences in Leyte, Mindanao State University, University of the Philippines-Manila.

The Philippine government took another step this month in opposing China by telling its vast fishing fleet to ignore Beijing’s annual fishing ban in the South China Sea, where the two countries are locked in a sovereignty dispute.
This year’s fishing moratorium “does not apply to our fishermen,” the Philippines’ South China Sea task force said on May 4, as reported by domestic media. Officials have “encouraged” fishing boats to trawl the sea, news website Philstar.com reported.
China’s moratorium from May 1 to August 16, imposed unilaterally since 1999 in the northern part of the sea, is intended to improve marine ecology, the official Xinhua News Agency in Beijing said last month. More than 50,000 Chinese vessels would suspend operations, it said.

+ May 15, 2021 THE Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, May 15, 2021, announced 10 more coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases caused by the more transmissible B.1.617.2 variant.
Including the first two cases announced on May 11, there are now 12 cases with the B.1.617.2 sub-lineage of the Sars-CoV-2 variant that was first detected in India.
The 10 additional B.1.617.2 cases were among 30 cases found to carry variants of concern (VOC). Another case was found to carry the P.3 variant, a variant of interest first reported in the Philippines.
