ECONOMIC PLANNERS will make their pitch to Congress on the urgency of passing economic reform bills before the legislature turns its attention to preparing for next year’s national elections, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said Monday.
“A few more months before the campaign season, we will work to get the rest of the bills passed. We will present to the Congress the urgency of having economic bills passed because these were packaged,” Acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick T. Chua said in a televised briefing.
Mr. Chua said the amendments to the Public Service Act, Retail Trade Liberalization Act, and the Foreign Investment Act, which are all pending at the Senate, should be passed this year as these are “crucial in revving up the Philippine economy” and sustaining its recovery from the pandemic.
Diaz named as Philippines Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

Diaz, a dean at the College of Human Kinetics at the University of the Philippines, takes up the role as preparations build ahead of the Paralympics - due to take place in seven months’ time.
The Philippines sent a team of five athletes to Rio 2016, with table tennis player Josephine Medina clinching bronze.
So far only swimmer Ernie Gawilan has booked a place at Tokyo 2020, although Medina is expected to seal a spot once.
Doubts remain over the staging of this year’s Games due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson J. Prospero De Vera III
De Vera made this comment in reference to the abrogation of the controversial pact between the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Department of National Defense (DND) also known as the “1989 UP-DND Accord.”
“Ang isang kasunduan, hindi naman yan nakataga sa bato na hindi na mapapalitan habang-buhay (An agreement, it is not set in stone that cannot be replaced forever),” De Vera said during the Laging Handa public briefing.
De Vera explained that as the world changes, with extremism present is many universities all over the world, there is a need to adjust certain agreements. “Kailangan ang isang kasunduan ay regular na nire-review, tinitingnan kung meron bang problema, kung meron bang di pagkakasundo at ayusin ito (An agreement needs to be reviewed regularly, to see if there is a problem, if there is a disagreement and fix it),” he added.
