Freedom Day reminds Durban activist of how many people died for democracy

Freedom Day of 1994 for a young Greta Apelgren-Narkedien, was a day to be celebrated as the first post-apartheid elections brought in a new era of hope for South Africa, however, it was also a day to reflect on how many people died and had to suffer for democracy.
“It was a tough day for me because as I voted I realised everything that had to happen to get to this day. The first day of elections was the first real day of freedom, but I couldn t stop thinking that so many people had died for this,” she said.

GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) handed over funding support to 22 students and 14 non-profit organisations (NPOs) on Thursday 22 April.
The students who are supported are studying towards accredited NQF qualifications, chemical engineering, tourism, computer science or law.
During his keynote address, Garden Route Mayor Memory Booysen said the municipality managed to make R210 000 available to NPOs despite tough budget cuts because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Students received R510 000 in total, which was partly funded by the Western Cape treasury.

Thirteen universities from South Africa feature in the 2021-2022 list of the top 2,000 universities compiled by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).
They are led by the University of Cape Town, ranked 269th globally, and followed by the University of the Witwatersrand at 292nd.
Stellenbosch University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, and the University of Pretoria round up the top five universities in South Africa, with the University of Johannesburg ranked sixth.
The only change in the local university rankings for 2021/22 is the University of the Free State overtaking the University of the Western Cape to be ranked eighth – having been ranked ninth last year.

CAPE TOWN - From a cleaner to a teacher, and now on the verge of bachelor’s degree in education, Natasha Dietrich wants other adults to get an education.
The 47-year-old spoke to Eyewitness News on Friday about her journey.
Dietrich said she always knew there was more to life even while working as a cleaner at the University of the Western Cape.
