Smith, executive vice president of the University of South Alabama, will serve as acting president as the university searches for a successor to its outgoing president, Tony Waldrop. The change is effective immediately, following a resolution approved Thursday morning by the USA board of trustees’ executive committee. Per that resolution, Waldrop’s official retirement date has been set at July 1. The executive committee has agreed to let Waldrop use accrued vacation time between now and then. Smith will serve as acting president “until such time that USA’s next president is selected and begins service.”
