Rapid City native wins prestigious Fulbright Award
University of South Dakota s Ross Oyler receives coveted Fulbright Award for an English Teaching Assistantship in Tajikistan.

VERMILLION, S.D. Rapid City native and recent University of South Dakota graduate Ross Oyler has received a prestigious Fulbright Award for an English Teaching Fellowship.
Oyler is one of 2,100 U.S. citizens who will study, research, and teach abroad for the 2021-2022 academic year. Recipients are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and professional achievement, and record of service.
“My application centered around leading outdoor education programs and clubs, so I am really looking forward to the opportunity to teach and share my passion for climbing and the outdoors,” Oyler said.

So how high did Nilsen vault? Try 19 4.75 this past weekend at the USATF Golden Games at Mt. Sac in Walnut, California.

After the competition, Nilsen thanked Nike for his spikes, his coach Mitch Krier and his friends at South Dakota Beef. He thanks, Build Your Base with Beef. They prepped me so well for this meet and without them, I wouldn t be in such great shape. He went on to say that eating well is such a big part of competing well, and they absolutely do your part.
SHELDONâAn apple a day is supposed to keep the doctor away but if you do have to make a trip to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center, there are two new faces to help you deal with whatever is ailing you at the time.
Katie Haverly joined Sanford Sheldon as a physician assistant in March and Rachel Van Briesen recently finished her orientation, so the nurse practitioner is on her own with patients at Sanford Sheldon and the Sanford Health Boyden Clinic.
Haverly, a Sioux Falls, SD, native, decided she wanted to enter the medical field after her grandfather went through some serious medical issues. She was 15 at the time.
Accounting professor receives Northwestern Teaching Excellence Award

Vonda Post, professor of accounting at Northwestern College, has been named the 2021 recipient of the Northwestern Teaching Excellence Award. She was honored during the college’s commencement ceremony on May 8.
The award is administered by a selection committee made up of Student Government Association members and Honors Program students. The committee chose Ross Bouma, instructor in kinesiology, and Dr. Chris Nonhof, assistant professor of education and English, as finalists along with Post.
The major factor used in selected the award winner is evidence of strong teaching ability. The committee looks at faculty vitae, service reports and course evaluations in addition to the comments of nominators.

As vaccination rates increase, more events are open to the public. The University of South Dakota took a creative way to share opera with the public by having an “Opera Pop Up” in public places around Vermillion.
Between classes Students stop and sit in the grass to listen to the first live performance the USD opera has had in months. Community members also gather in front of Slagle hall as they are drawn by the sound of harmonizing voices. Performers take turns singing, accompanied by a small orchestra. A crowd grows from dozens to nearly a hundred.
Tracelyn Gesteland is the director of the USD opera. She says it was wonderful to hear the students singing together again.
