Two weeks back, we wrote about the academic research success of South Dakota s public universities. Now, we follow up with a recommendation: use that research to improve health, business, justice and many other parts of our lives.
Academic research is conducted by both faculty and students, and the disciplined process helps those involved. But we often think of how quality research sometimes ends up collecting dust on a shelf rather than being used in real life.
Some research is presented at conferences, but those listening are often other academics. We need to improve the distribution and use of research outside the universities.
It was the sandhill cranes that sparked Lee Schoeneweâs artistic imagination.
After a birding tour to see the crane migration in Nebraska he picked up a small cane in an antique shop and transformed it to resemble one of the birds they had just seen.
A pair of fellow birders and artists on the trip made a point to encourage Lee in this newfound hobby.
Another artist that has actively encouraged him actually shares his studio space.
That would be his wife, Nancy.
âWe all felt he had this talent for folk art,â Nancy said. âThey really encouraged Lee, we all did, and when you get that from a person whoâs good in their field it really goes a long way.â
VERMILLION – Guard Walt McGrory is joining University of South Dakota men’s basketball as a graduate transfer.
McGrory played for four years at the University of Wisconsin where he appeared in 36 games in four seasons and was a two-time All-Academic Big Ten selection.
He is from Edina, Minnesota, where he is the all-time leading scorer at Edina High School with 2,126 points. In McGrory’s senior year there, he averaged 26.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game.
Educators, historians and some elected officials are urging South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and the state Department of Education to keep politics and personal bias out of the process to develop a new and enhanced civics and history education program for public K-12 schools across the state.
In her State of the State speech in January, the governor proposed one-time funding to enhance and expand teaching of civics and history in public schools, and the state Legislature approved her $900,000 request during the spring session.
In response, the state education department has embarked on development of the South Dakota Civics and History Initiative, a two-year, four-pronged plan to create new teaching content, provide new resources and training for teachers, and increase access to civic and historical lessons and experiences for students, especially at the elementary level. When the plan is finalized, use of the program will be optional for school districts.
