The Fiji Times » Higher risk for pregnant women

Ian Chute 20 July, 2021, 2:30 pm Pregnant women have a 22 times increased chance of dying if they contract COVID-19. This, according to New Zealand public health advocate and Immunisation Advisory Centre director Professor Nikki Turner. Picture: JOVESA NAISUA/FILE Multiple factors, including being pregnant, can affect the seriousness of COVID-19 infections in women, says Professor Caroline Homer. Photo: Harvey et al. https://doi.org/10.3390/ani11072101 Researchers have successfully used photographs and videos collected from camera traps to make welfare assessments of free-roaming wild horses. The researchers were able to identify a majority of the horses captured by the cameras, having applied a previously developed protocol for scientifically assessing the welfare of each animal. “Camera trapping was successful in detecting and identifying horses across a range of habitats, including woodlands where horses could not be directly observed,” Andrea Harvey and her fellow researchers reported in the journal

How museums could light up and display more of the world s precious objects for longer

The two key objectives of museums exhibition and preservation are often in conflict. Exhibiting an object and exposing it to elements like lighting, fluctuating temperature, humidity and variable air quality can cause damage and degradation. The very decision to exhibit an item may mean its future is compromised. In fact, the majority of objects in museum collections are in storage. This is only partly to do with resources and display space. It is largely due to conservation requirements. I am a researcher at the University of Technology Sydney and a lighting designer at Steensen Varming. With other researchers and designers, I am exploring how museums can improve displays for visitors while also addressing preservation with new advances in lighting technology and applications.
