On Monday a long-awaited report from AFL club Collingwood was released which found systemic racism has long existed at the club.
The report from two University of Technology Sydney academics who interviewed 30 people said âthere is a culture of individuals, if not quite being bigger than the club, then at least having an unhealthy Âdegree of influence over club cultureâ.
In a press conference on Monday, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said it was a âhistoric and proud dayâ for the club causing wide-spread backlash from players, fans and sponsors including calls for McGuire to stand down.
The release of the report has seen some critics of the code suggest the racism problem stretches beyond Collingwood and is endemic in the AFL more broadly.

Twitter has long provided a short, sharp take on the community s fears, anxieties and experiences. Now, data scientists have analysed 94 million tweets from the first months of the pandemic to track COVID-19 s effect on mental health in NSW.
The research team used machine learning to develop a model able to capture data indicating depression, stress, anxiety and suicidal thoughts among users of the social media platform.
The aim was to tap into popular technology to help public health experts identify changes in community levels of depression over time.

The symbolism could not have been more painstaking. Decked in a black-and-white ensemble, blood of the very same colours flowing through his veins, Eddie MGuire fronted the media and sought to find areas of grey when there was none. Straight-faced, McGuire insisted he was not the president of a racist club when the Do Better report, its findings writ large in black and white, suggested precisely the opposite.
This is true to form for McGuire and the club he has governed for more than two decades. Allegations of systemic prejudice at the AFL club have been doing the rounds for years. The Magpies’ modus operandi has forever been to deny and deflect when confronted with claims of racism, to protect the brand first and foremost. Whether going in to bat for himself or his club, McGuire became the master of damage control. But now there can be nowhere to hide.
