On Jan. 21, this headline and Associated Press story appeared in the bottom right-hand corner of The Daily Nonpareilâs front page. It was the first time the Nonpareil had picked up a story about an outbreak that was happening on the other side of the world.
It was not the first news of the pandemic. Stories of an outbreak in China had dotted national news outlets â in print, television and digital. At the time, many of us didnât know what exactly a âcoronavirusâ was. We had heard people were getting sick â -including the health care workers who were treating sick patients.
Leo F. Connolly always tried to be fair, friendly and firm during his 30 years as an Iowa District Court judge. âThatâs also the way he raised his kids,â son Joseph Connolly said. âHe was always fair, and he was always friendly, but he was always firm, as well. He treated everybody the same, and he was very genuine. That was a great lesson to learn.â Leo Connolly died in his sleep at an assisted living home in Tucson, Arizona, on March 19.
In a full life cut short by cancer, costume designer Travis Halsey stood tall. He found success designing for theater and ballet companies in Omaha, Houston, Chicago and beyond, eventually starting his own business. And a tall, permanent reminder of Halsey adorns the front of CHI Health Center Omaha. He was sculptor Matthew Placzekâs model for the 14-foot statue of a mime on stilts near the doors of the arena. He died of liver cancer April 6.

The family of a 65-year-old Iowa man is suing Tyson after he died of COVID-19 while working at the company s pork plant in Storm Lake. Michael Everhard, of Fonda, died June 18, three weeks after he contracted the virus. His family contends in a lawsuit that Tyson didn t implement proper safety precautions to protect Everhard and other employees from the virus. Several Tyson executives at the plant are also named in the lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of Everhard s three children. A Tyson spokeswoman said the company has implemented several safety measures that meet or exceed federal guidelines designed to slow the spread of the
