Nevada Reports Grim Record Of COVID-19 Deaths, Breaking Previous Record Set Saturday
Nevada reported another new grim milestone Wednesday, as 71 Nevadans lost their lives to COVID-19. This breaks Saturday’s previous record of 63 lives lost. There have been a total of over 3,800 COVID-19 deaths since March.
In Nevada, on average, there have been about 1,500 new daily cases over the last two weeks, along with 20 deaths daily during the same time period. There are more than 1,700 people hospitalized with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 statewide. More than 77% of staffed hospital beds are occupied.
The Washoe County Health District reported five additional COVID-19-related deaths Wednesday, bringing the county total to 573. The county also reported 68 additional cases Wednesday.

Losing someone with the guidance, wisdom and grace under fire consistently exhibited by Mark Ghan just isn’t replaceable at any college.
Fortunately for Western Nevada College, the former acting president and longtime vice president has decided to serve as a consultant to the college as he ventures into retirement this year.
Ghan has specialized in serving WNC’s legal counsel needs and overseeing special projects during his time at WNC. But he has been so much more to the college community than a crisis manager.
UNLV will retire Hey Reb! mascot but keep its Rebels nickname saying it refers to trailblazing spirit, not the Confederacy, after it removed a statue during summer BLM controversy
UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield said in a letter to students that for all intents and purposes the mascot had been retired since last spring
Whitfield noted that a number of other schools and some NFL teams do not have mascots
He added that the school did not have a mascot in the 1970s, as the school shifted away from another previous mascot that was deemed racist
In 1982, UNLV introduced Hey Reb! which was created by Mike Miller, who said it was inspired by the Western trailblazers of the 1800s
