New research looks at teen bariatric surgery outcomes by age

E-Mail Obesity and its duration are significant risk factors for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular events, multiple cancers and decreased quality of life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects 20.6% of adolescents ages 12-19 in the United States, meaning a potential lifetime of dealing with this condition. Complications from obesity can also result in a potentially decreased life expectancy of five to 20 years for these youth. In a new study published in Pediatrics, researchers at Children s Hospital Colorado (Children s Colorado) have found that both younger and older adolescents have similar weight loss, resolution of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, nutritional impacts and improvement in quality of life after bariatric surgery. These results strongly indicate that, when working with adolescents with severe obesity, age alone should not dissuade providers and patients from pursuing surgery when medically indicated.

Too Big to Fail: How Does This Phrase Relate to Pennsylvania s Dairy Industry? | Columnists

The too-big-to-fail theory maintains that certain institutions, often financial, are so interconnected with others that their failure would literally result in the destruction of the overall economic system. These institutions should, therefore, be supported by government. The phrase originated with Congressman Stewart McKinney, R-Connecticut, in 1984 when he was discussing the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s intervention in the failure of Continental Illinois, at one time the seventh-largest bank in the U.S. Most of us weren’t familiar with the phrase until 2007-08, during the global financial crisis. You may be thinking, “How does this relate to Pennsylvania’s dairy industry?”

But the next few months will still bring many sick people and doctors have woefully few drugs with which to treat them. A handful of therapies remdesivir, monoclonal antibodies and the steroid dexamethasone have improved the care of Covid patients, putting doctors in a better position than they were when the virus surged last spring. But these drugs are not cure-alls and they’re not for everyone, and efforts to repurpose other drugs, or discover new ones, have not had much success.
