Campaign reports detail candidate donations Written by Cynthia Calvert Published: 20 April 2021 The first round of required campaign reports have been filed by candidates for the May 1 Humble ISD school board election. The reports are for the initial period ending March 31. State law dictates reports must be filed 30 days before the election and again eight days before the vote. All the reports may be found on the Humble ISD website under the “school board” tab. Several running have amassed significant sums while most of the 19 running have received much less or no money at all. Chris Parker, candidate for the open seat Pos. 3, collected the highest amount of donations, $12,910.60. Robert Sitton, the incumbent running for Pos. 1, garnered the second highest with $11,952.04. UNO Press Lecture Series Features Author Kalamu ya Salaam

The University of New Orleans Press and Earl K. Long Library will present a lecture on April 29 called “What Langston Did,” featuring author and Runagate Press imprint editor Kalamu ya Salaam, along with UNO Press editor Chelsey Shannon. Shannon and Salaam will explore Salaam’s latest release, “Cosmic Deputy,” part anthology and part creative treatise, that traces his evolution as a poet and names writer Langston Hughes as one of his most influential mentors. They will discuss the lasting influence, as well as the breadth and depth of Hughes’ accomplishments as a writer. This free virtual event will stream live at 6 p.m. on the UNO Press’s Facebook page as well as its YouTube channel.

Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life, Center for Academic Equity celebrate new space

In 2019, Tulane announced that the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office of Gender and Sexual Diversity, along with Religious Life, would be renamed the Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life in honor of Carolyn Barber-Pierre, assistant vice president for Student Affairs and Intercultural Life, who has worked at Tulane for more than 30 years, serving the student community and moving the university toward a more inclusive environmental for all. Gibson was considered by man6y to be an authentic representation of the spirit and legacy of Louis Armstrong. A joyful, resilient, and ubiquitous musical presence on the streets of New Orleans and around the world, New Orleans trumpeter Terry Steve Gibson, Jr. definitely knew how to make people smile.
