Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 24 (ANI): Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said on Monday that the ninth season of TCS CodeVita has won a Guinness World Records title as the world's largest computer programming competition with 1.36 lakh participants from 34 countries.
Pursuing foundational technology leading to quantum computers
A quantum computer is scheduled to make its first appearance in Japan before the end of fiscal year 2019. The D-Wave quantum computer will be installed in the research center formed by Tokyo Tech and Tohoku University. To date, Tokyo Tech researchers have been accessing a machine installed outside Japan via the cloud. But now progress is being made to join Tokyo Tech s basic research with Tohoku University s applied research, and also cooperate with industry to develop a global research hub. In the field of quantum computers, filled with brilliant, global-scale advances in R&D, Associate Professor Tetsuo Kodera is working to develop foundational technologies using semiconductor silicon. We asked Kodera and two of his students to tell us about the current state of quantum computing and the outlook for its evolution.

New network for mental health research
A new national collaboration to transform the way mental health treatment is developed and tested will be led by Deakin University and partners including The University of Western Australia, with $12 million support from the Federal Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
The Mental Health Australia General Clinical Trial Network (MAGNET) will start as a five-year project that will be funded through the MRFF’s Million Minds Mission, as recently announced in the Federal Budget.
Professor Sean Hood, Head of UWA Medical School’s Psychiatry Division, and Osvaldo Almeida, Professor in Psychiatry, also from the UWA Medical School, are among 50 chief investigators involved in the project.
Chase Mining seeking financial or commercial partner to progress topaz research project commercialisation
The large deposit of topaz at Torrington, NSW, can be used to develop a high-value niche product (fibres) and a large-volume, low-value product (fluoride) which would attract clientele in laboratories and companies servicing the aviation industry and the military. The research was co-funded through an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant.

The 2021 TCS CodeVita competition invited college students from around the world to pit their programming skills against each other to be ranked among the top student programmers globally. Their knowledge and coding skills were tested as they solved complex real-world problems over an intense six-hour period. The winners walked away with cash prizes, and internship offers to work directly with technology leaders at TCS. This year’s champion, Ben Alexander Mirtchouk of Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, is the competition’s first ever US winner.
