The importance of preserving kauri has perhaps never been clearer.
Scientists looking at ancient kauri trees in Northland say they ve come across evidence within them that could rewrite human history. It s the most surprising and important discovery I ve ever been involved in, said Professor Alan Cooper of the South Australian Museum, who co-led the new research, published Friday in journal
So what exactly did they find? Evidence that about 42,000 years ago the Earth s magnetic pole went haywire, perhaps wiping out the Neanderthals, but sending Homo sapiens into the safety of caves and inspiring art that we re still finding today.
While the approximate date of the pole shift was already known, examination of the kauri has allowed scientists to precisely date the timing and environmental impacts of the last magnetic pole switch , according to Chris Turney, professor at the University of New South Wales.

Positive signs of immunity after COVID-19 infection
Australian scientists have described the evolution of immunity levels up to four months following COVID-19 infection, finding that while antibody levels drop dramatically in the first one to two months, the decrease then slows down substantially.
The findings suggest that protective COVID-19 vaccines should ideally generate stronger antibody responses than natural infection.
The research, led by Professor Stephen Kent from the Doherty Institute in collaboration with the University of New South Wales Kirby Institute and Flinders University, has been published in high ranking journal Nature Communications,
The team, including University of Melbourne Dr Jennifer Juno, a Senior Research Fellow at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute), have been investigating how the immune system, particularly B and T cells, responds to the COVID-19 spike protein.
NASA s Perseverance rover nails historic Mars landing, sends first images of Jezero Crater
Touchdown confirmed! NASA lands its most ambitious, advanced robotic rover in an ancient lake bed on the red planet. Listen - 05:14
This landing animation from NASA depicts its next-gen Mars rover touching down in Jezero Crater. NASA
Hoots and hollers rang throughout NASA s Mission Control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, at the moment of touchdown, but this wasn t like past Mars landings. Jubilant scientists and engineers jumped from chairs, but social distancing requirements prevented them (mostly) from their usual hearty embraces. Now playing: Watch this:
Many women feel left out of breast reconstruction decision making, QUT research reveals
When women undergo surgical treatment for breast cancer, they often also have reconstructive surgery but new QUT research reveals many women feel left out of the decision making.
An interdisciplinary study from researchers in QUT s Centre for Behavioural Economics, Society and Technology (BEST), Engineering Faculty, and School of Nursing, along with Dr Jeremy Hunt a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Dr Tim Peltz from the University of New South Wales, on Knowledge, consultation time and choice in breast reconstruction has just been published in the
