Although the entire prep sports season was condensed into one lightning round of five months, it shall always remain a year to remember, no asterisks necessary. For all of those athletes and coaches who got it done, a giant tip of the fedora. Well played. You all deserve every accolade and pat on the back you receive. Although the season was markedly different and compressed, there were still those who stood out from the rest and this is Journal North’s annual rundown of the best of the best in each sport.
FALL
Wakei Hettinga, Los Alamos: Hettinga finally burst from the long shadow cast by teammate Rafael Sanchez, surging to the end of the Class 4A championships in 16 minutes, 10.56 seconds to finish fifth overall and help the Hilltoppers earn the runner-up spot on the podium in the NMAA’s first pre-pandemic championship.

Bobby Hall Jr., of Bluefield, West Virginia, Caroline Clay of Greenup, Kentucky, and Connor Murphy-White from Greenville, Alabama, all call Sugarcreek home this summer as they act and sing in several shows a week through Oct. 28.
The cast members are part of the production team of Blue Gate Musicals out of Nashville, Tennessee. Blue Gate is one of several companies that choose from a pool of around 500 actors to perform in venues like Ohio Star Theater across the country.

With 225.5 points, the University of New Mexico finished 80th of 293 schools listed in the Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup final standings released Friday for the 2020-21 academic year. Texas was the overall winner with 1,252 points, edging Stanford (1,195.75).
UNM, which won six Mountain West championships and appeared in six NCAA postseason competitions, finished second among Mountain West schools to Air Force (65, 325.25 points) and seventh among non-Power 5 FBS schools.
New Mexico State finished 239th with 43.50 points, third best in the Western Athletic Conference. UTEP was 287th with 13 points.
