UNM awarded $3 7 million from EPA for drinking water and wastewater projects

The University of New Mexico is one of the lead institutions that will receive grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for training and technical assistance to small drinking water and wastewater systems serving mostly small communities throughout the United States and its territories. Heather Himmelberger, director of the Southwest Environmental Finance Center at UNM, is leading two projects, which are: $2.7 million to provide training and technical assistance for small public water systems to achieve and maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, including improving financial and managerial capacity $1 million to work with small publicly-owned wastewater and on-site/decentralized wastewater systems to improve water quality.

Indian Health Service offers Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to kids 12-15

FARMINGTON  The Indian Health Service has started giving shots of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to adolescents ages 12-15. The IHS posted on its Facebook page on May 12 that its facilities can vaccinate those who are ages 12 and older with the Pfizer vaccine. The action follows approvals from the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week. Check with your local IHS, tribal health program or urban Indian health program for more information, the post stated. Brian Johnson, acting deputy director of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, said on May 13 that the IHS headquarters gave the greenlight for facilities to distribute the vaccine, an action that providers had been anticipating.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team shot the best of its three rounds Wednesday, but finished tied for 15th place at the 18-team NCAA Columbus Regional. UNM posted an 8-over-par 296 in round three and 52-over-par for the tournament. Georgia, at 1-over the runaway winner by 15 shots, advances to the final round along with Duke, Arizona State, Kentucky, Michigan and Kent State. Senior Caroline Jansson turned in a par-72 performance in round three to shoot up 23 spots on the leaderboard after shooting 79 and 78 in her first two rounds. Her final score of 13-over 229 tied for 45th overall.

Lawsuit filed in fatal fall outside UNM stadium

Now, John Haaland’s family is suing the University of New Mexico, alleging university officials allowed what the lawsuit describes as dangerous conditions at the stadium that led to Haaland tripping over a buildup of asphalt. Haaland, 74, was entering University Stadium to attend a UNM-Hawaii football game on Oct. 27, 2019, when he tripped and fatally struck his head, the Journal reported at the time. ...................... His family filed the wrongful death lawsuit April 28 alleging UNM was negligent in failing to properly maintain the parking lot at the stadium. They are asking a 2nd Judicial District Court judge to award the family compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial.
