ENMU named military friendly

PORTALES Eastern New Mexico University has been named one of six 2021–22 Military Friendly schools, and received the organization’s silver rating.
Institutions earning the designation were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,200 schools participated in the 2021–22 survey, with 747 earning the designation.
The list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at militaryfriendly.com. Eastern New Mexico was listed as a small public school, along with New Mexico Tech. Other New Mexico schools listed include the University of New Mexico, San Juan College, Central New Mexico Community College and Olympian Academy of Cosmetology and Barber.

With less than a week remaining in the New Mexico legislative session, state senators are hashing out a proposal that could change the way education is funded for decades by increasing withdrawals from a unique $20 billion public endowment.
The initiative advanced Tuesday toward a Senate floor vote that would tap the trust fund to increase spending on preschool and K-12 education by about $250 million a year. Legislative approval would send the proposed constitutional amendment to a statewide vote.
The Land Grant Permanent Fund currently pays out 5% of its average five-year balance, mostly to K-12 schools. Oil income and investment gains doubled the value of the fund over the past 11 years.
AUSTIN, Texas The University of New Mexico men’s golf team wrapped up the George Hannon Invitational hosted by UT Austin on Tuesday in fifth place overall in a field of stacked squads. The Lobos placed fifth behind four teams ranked nationally in the top 20.
No. 27 New Mexico was tied for eighth after the first round but jumped up three spots after round two, cutting nine strokes off the team score to finish two under in the second round. In round three Tuesday, the Lobos shot a 295 (+11) to finish +16 on the competition.
No. 12 Texas took first, finishing -17 over three rounds, followed by No. 19 Texas Tech and No. 2 Oklahoma, which tied for second with a final score of 843 (-9).

My second choice, Gregg Popovich, apparently couldn’t be pried away from the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs. Warm and fuzzy with the media as he is, Pop would have been fun to cover.
My third choice, me, never got a call back from athletic director Eddie Nuñez. His and the program’s loss. My personal memories of the peach basket-and-ladder days could have proved invaluable.
