This time next July, we are going to lose a key federal program, and you hardly even hear about it. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) will come to an end on July 11, 2022. We need our elected representatives in Congress to extend and expand that program before it runs out.
Congress first passed RECA in 1990. The idea was to help cover health costs for many of the communities exposed to nuclear radiation through the U.S. nuclear weapons programs. Those programs began in the 1940s, most notably here in New Mexico, with the first nuclear test in 1945. Above-ground nuclear tests would continue until 1962 an,d to support the thousands of new nuclear weapons being built, an expansive uranium mining and processing program began in our state and elsewhere.
UNM National Anthem Auditions Set for August 10
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico athletic department will host auditions for national anthem singers on Tuesday, Aug. 10 starting at 4 p.m. in The Pit.
National anthem singers will have the opportunity to perform for Lobo basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and soccer. Each singer will have two minutes to perform a traditional version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.
“ Vocalists, groups, and instrumentalists are welcome.
Interested singers must reserve a time slot to audition; there will be no guarantee for walk-ins the day of auditions. Those auditioning are asked to be prompt and ready to sing when they arrive at The Pit. Check in will be at the Northeast corner of the facility near the Lobo Ticket Office.
Lobos Make Additions to External Staff
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Jonathan Tibbetts, a graduate of UNM, and Corie Apodaca, a graduate of Chestnut Hill College, have been hired by The University of New Mexico Athletic Department. Tibbetts will serve as the Assistant Director of Creative Services, and Apodaca will be the Assistant Director of Marketing.
“We are thrilled with these new additions to our staff,” said Associate A.D. for Marketing and Communications Joe Thuente. “Our staff is coming together great, and I cannot wait for next season to start.”
Tibbetts, a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, most recently served as a graduate assistant in graphic design for TCU football, where he designed elements for all TCU social media platforms. While at TCU, Tibbetts earned a master’s degree in liberal arts, graduating earlier this year. Tibbetts is no stranger to UNM, previously serving as a senior graphic designer for UNM’s football and basketball programs, creating promotional it
