New leaders up to pandemic challenge
Exactly 29 days before life as we knew it dramatically shifted from coming together to staying apart, Michael Mansfield attended his first Dunkirk Board of Education meeting. The lifelong Chautauqua County resident was being announced as its new superintendent.
“We want to improve attendance,” he said regarding his goals on Feb. 11. “If we get students here and we get good attendance we can do good work with them.”

Eugenics is a practice designed to improve a population’s gene pool. The issue has reappeared with Danish parents aborting fetuses who will become cognitively disabled (in ordinary English, retarded).
Writing in The Atlantic, Sarah Zhang notes that in Denmark, couples use taxpayer-funded prenatal testing for Down Syndrome and other genetic defects. As a result, 95% of couples who discover their fetuses have Down Syndrome abort them. In 2019, she notes, only 18 Down Syndrome children were born in the country (population 6 million).
Responding in The Federalist and on the Tucker Carlson Tonight, Evita Duffy, writes that eugenic abortion is evil. She argues that the Danish people are attempting to exterminate those with Down Syndrome, which, she claims, is the opposite of a culture of life and is similar to the Nazi attempt to eliminate those with serious disabilities. She questions Zhang’s and the left’s consistency in not judging the practice. She notes that

Every year, the U.S. Postal Service sponsors an event called Operation Santa where children write letters to Santa asking for things. Many get returned to the return address label so parents can fulfill their child’s desire.
However, there’s several that don’t. Those letters instead get forwarded to the Operation Santa organization where they are uploaded to a website for people around America to adopt.
One coach at the State University of New York at Fredonia, Astrid Escobar, got caught up in reading some of the devastating letters of last year and decided she wanted to help. Pairing up with marketing junior Melena DeBoe, whom she helped with getting an absentee ballot this year, the two started working on this project.
