Doggies helping doggies: canine blood donations are saving lives

Florida wildlife officials to hold five tag your reptile days in May and June

Worried about how to track your tegu if it makes a jailbreak? Florida wildlife officials will hold a Tag Your Reptile Day at Brevard Zoo June 5. You can bring your pet green iguana or tegu to the event to get them microchipped for free. It s one of five similar events throughout the state in May and June to nudge pet owners into following new rules to protect Florida native habitats and wildlife from high-risk, exotic reptiles.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is helping people who have pet green iguanas and tegus come into compliance with the new rules governing those and 14 other reptile species, which take effect Thursday.

Florida shelters work to keep pets, people together during pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic could have been heartbreaking for pet owners who lost their jobs or had their hours cut so they could no longer afford to care for their cats and dogs. But a system of social services for keeping pets with their people  food banks, low-cost veterinary care, vouchers for apartment pet deposits  has become what advocates hope will be a model for the post-pandemic future of animal shelters. That is an upshot from a 2020 survey of shelters statewide by the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. “The hope is that these progressive changes that seek to help families keep their pets and prevent the need to institutionalize them will be sticky and persist past the pandemic,” said Dr. Julie Levy, professor of shelter medicine. “There is a whole new reimagining of sheltering that has given rise  to a new organization  Human Animal Support Services.”
