COVID Florida: Government sending vaccines to target underserved populations

The federal government is sending vaccine to two nonprofit health centers in Southwest Florida to target their undeserved and vulnerable patients that have lagged in getting immunized. The organizations are Collier County-based Healthcare Network and Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida, which operates in Lee, Charlotte and Hendry counties, according to the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The two organizations are among a growing list of federally qualified centers nationwide that can receive vaccine to get the shots into the arms of their vulnerable patients. The centers specialize in caring for particularly hard-to-reach and disproportionately affected populations that include the homeless, residents of public housing, seasonal farmworkers and people with limited proficiency in the English language. In exchange, the clinics receive federal support.
