Management Significantly Affects Foals Gut Microbiota – The Horse

The answers to these questions might have consequences on your foal’s digestive health, even on a microscopic level. In a new study, young foals raised as members of a free-roaming herd had a vastly more varied hindgut microbiome than those raised in stalls with regular turnout. The results suggest that even in the first six weeks of life, when foals are still mostly nursing, management affects horses’ gut microbiota, said Meredith Tavenner, MSc, of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Delaware, in Newark.

The historic stone barn that had apartment units in it burned up in one of several brush fires across Chester County Sunday as high winds and low humidity stoked fires. The barn fire on Wawaset Road was among multiple blazes that fire and emergency crews rushed to throughout the afternoon.

EHV-1 Positive Horse In Pennsylvania Not Associated With European Outbreak  Sponsored by: On March 3, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported that one horse was euthanized after being admitted to the University of Pennsylvania s New Bolton Center with neurologic signs of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHV-1). The horse, who lived in Pennsylvania, had no known affiliation with any international travel or competition, and is not considered to be associated in any way with the EHV-1 outbreak in Europe. Veterinarians and horse owners in the United States are closely following the EHV-1 outbreak in Europe and remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent its spread to the States. EHV-1 is spread between horses from nasal discharge or aerosol droplets, as well as from touching contaminated surfaces.
