Puerto Rico sees a surge in tourism – and a rise in aggressive tourist behavior

Low-cost flights to Puerto Rico have enticed many travelers to choose the island as a vacation spot during the pandemic. A one-way flight to Puerto Rico from Florida booked two days in advance could be as low as $62. Hotel occupancy reached 60% during Presidents’ Day holiday weekend in February, according to the island’s destination marketing organization, Discover Puerto Rico. It was the highest number since Christmas, and hotels expect to reach the same occupancy rates for the forthcoming spring break. “We are certainly seeing the effects of increased traveler confidence coinciding with vaccine distribution in the US,” said Brad Dean, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico.

New NAU president pledges to boost graduation rates

Northern Arizona University s incoming president, an engineer who helped lead one of the world s largest urban universities, lists among his goals a pledge to boost Native American and Hispanic graduation rates. He officially will step into the job on June 14. But he said work on the transition   to blaze the trail to the bold future that awaits us   will begin immediately. Dr. José Luis Cruz was appointed unanimously on Wednesday by the Arizona Board of Regents, which oversees the state s three public universities. Cruz praised the rigorous selection process and thanked the students, faculty, tribal leaders, elected officials and Flagstaff residents who asked thoughtful questions and shared concerns while he was applying.

Cruz, who had been the executive vice chancellor and university provost of The City University of New York, accepted the position at NAU on Feb. 18. He’s already visited the Flagstaff campus and cited plans to develop programs and build initiatives that improve the university’s access, success and community engagement. Cruz said he decided to leave his position in New York to become NAU’s 17th president because he wanted to return to a more community-integrated university.
