Harvard University to mandate COVID vaccines for all students living on campus ahead of fall semester

Harvard University to mandate COVID vaccines for all students living on campus ahead of fall semester Updated May 05, 2021; Harvard University will be mandating that all students living on campus get a COVID-19 vaccine before returning to school in the fall, according to the Harvard Crimson. The university’s president Lawrence S. Bacow wrote in an email that students should get vaccinated at least two weeks prior to returning to campus, the college newspaper reports. Administrators said there will be exceptions, but only for “medical or religious reasons.” International students and others who can’t access a vaccine will be able to get the shot when they arrive on campus, the Crimson reports. But those people may be subjected to frequent testing until they are fully vaccinated.

Elections in India intensified spread of Covid-19 pandemic s second wave

NEW DELHI - It was a day India reported nearly 370,000 fresh coronavirus infections. Uttar Pradesh, its most populous state, was among the top four in a list of states with highest caseloads that day. Yet, on May 2, thousands gathered and jostled at polling centres across Uttar Pradesh, where votes for recently held village council elections were being counted. Visuals of so many people gathering with no adherence to physical distancing norms were an ominous reminder of how elections have fanned the spread of the second wave of Covid-19 in India. Assembly elections were held in the states of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and the union territory of Puducherry in March and April.

There s got to be a better way to fund conservation in Mass

There’s got to be a better way to fund conservation in Mass. Updated May 4, 2021, 2:30 a.m. Email to a Friend Yes, we all should pay to support the outdoors Why is MassWildlife, a state agency with a wide-ranging and important mandate, expected to be largely self-funded? In the front-page article “Wild but not free” (April 28), Billy Baker offers the question, “Is it time for everyone to pay for the outdoors?” The answer is yes, of course. We pay for pretty much everything else out of our taxes, and I do understand the history of the wildlife conservation funding structure, but surely our elected officials are capable of updating it given the grave importance of keeping our natural spaces healthy and balanced. Just a little innovative thinking is needed, and if Governor Baker really cares about wildlife and conservation, he and his team will make sure the money is found.

Over the next two years, the committee plans to explore possible financial compensation and other recommendations for the descendants of enslaved people. It would examine how slavery, segregation, redlining, predatory financial practices, and other social and political ills contributed to the mistreatment and subsequent wealth gap and other disparities affecting Black people in the city.
