AMHERST, Mass. – An exploration of how higher education faculty members perceive the equity and fairness of workloads in their departments may provide insight for creating pathways for women – and women of color, in particular – to be more successful in a wide range of occupations, according to a new study published online by the journal
The team of interdisciplinary researchers, including sociologist and lead author Joya Misra of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, observed that workload transparency and clarity, and consistent approaches to assigning classes, advising and service, can reduce perceptions of inequitable and unfair workloads among wome

AMHERST, Mass. - Last month saw the average concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) climb to almost 418 parts-per-million, a level not seen on Earth for millions of years. In order to get a sense of what our future may hold, scientists have been looking to the deep past. Now, new research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which combines climate, ice sheet and vegetation model simulations with a suite of different climatic and geologic scenarios, opens the clearest window yet into the deep history of the Antarctic ice sheet and what our planetary future might hold.
Experts Predict Accelerating Cost Reductions in Offshore Wind Study by wind energy researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UMass Amherst shows expected cost declines of 17%–35% by 2035 and 37%–49% by 2050

BELCHERTOWN Elly Vaughan bought the farm that would become Phoenix Fruit Farm in 2017, after working as its manager. Since taking over she has planted new varieties of fruit trees, brought the farm into the vegetable business and opened a farm store. This year, however, something happened on her farm that Vaughan had never seen before: She assembled an all-woman pruning crew.
Vaughan, 35, has been farming since her college years, but she’s never worked on a crew that’s all women.
“Most of the times you’re the only woman on the crew,” she said.
The crew was formed after her assistant grower, Natalie Goodman, suggested bringing in some friends she knew from rock climbing for the pruning work.
