Research reveals the role of dopamine in how songbirds learn complex new sounds
Neuroscientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have demonstrated in new research that dopamine plays a key role in how songbirds learn complex new sounds.
Published in the
Journal of Neuroscience, the finding that dopamine drives plasticity in the auditory pallium of zebra finches lays new groundwork for advancing the understanding of the functions of this neurotransmitter in an area of the brain that encodes complex stimuli. People associate dopamine with reward and pleasure, says lead author Matheus Macedo-Lima, who performed the research in the lab of senior author Luke Remage-Healey as a Ph.D. student in UMass Amherst s Neuroscience and Behavior graduate program.
New Technology Uses Human Skin to Charge Smartwatches by Saisruthi Sankaranarayanan on July 5, 2021 at 11:35 AM
Smartwatches have become widely popular as they come with extremely useful features, including health monitoring. The main reason why some users discontinue their use is the need to charge the on-device battery frequently. Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst have found a real-world solution that helps solve this problem. Quality of sleep and its patterns contain a lot of important information about patients health conditions, says Sunghoon Ivan Lee, assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Information and Computer Sciences.
This rationale made him and his team look for a solution that can eliminate the need for mere disconnection of smartwatches from users bodies during sleep times.
