Police investigate triple homicide in central Mississippi

CANTON, Miss. (AP) A man and a pregnant woman were shot to death and the woman’s 1-year-old daughter was wounded during a robbery early Tuesday in a home in central Mississippi, a police chief said.
Canton Chief Otha Brown told news outlets that the people killed were brother and sister. The woman was about eight months’ pregnant, and the baby inside her also died. He said the case is being investigated as a triple homicide.
The surviving child, who was shot in the face, was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in critical condition.

Canton Police say a man, woman and her unborn baby were killed in a home invasion early Tuesday morning.
Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said a 1-year-old girl was shot in the face and taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she is in currently in stable condition.
A neighbor called police after a teenager who was in the house during the robbery came seeking help, Brown said
Brown said Maudilia Martina Ramirez Garcia, 19, was found dead inside the house lying on a bed. The woman, who was eight months pregnant, had been shot in the face. Her brother, Faustino Ramirez Garcia, 20, was found on the floor in the house. Brown said Garcia had been shot in the back of the head.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Children are more at risk of contracting the coronavirus at a social gathering than in a classroom or childcare setting, according to a study released by the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
The study, conducted in partnership with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was featured in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Dec. 18 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Researchers surveyed patients younger than 18 who had tested positive for the virus in emergency departments and outpatient health facilities during September, October and November.
