In August, Paul Senker took a trip home to Philadelphia and had a revelation. The 32-year-old water resources engineer had been living alone in Los Angeles since the start of the pandemic, his fifth year in Southern California. Back in Philly, seeing his parents and his brother who had recently moved home, he thought: “California’s really great, but it’s not going to give me the thing I need. A large-scale clinic at DeVos Place convention center in downtown Grand Rapids is scheduled to open Monday as part of a partnership between the Kent County Health Department, Spectrum Health and Mercy Health Saint Mary’s. Initially, the clinic will have roughly 7,200 doses of the vaccine to distribute starting next week, with the goal of eventually ramping up to 20,000 doses a day. However, with the vaccine in high-demand and short-supply, it’s unclear when the clinic will be able to reach that goal.
