The county will join the nation in the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign running from May 17 to June 6. The national campaign runs alongside the start of the busy summer travel season. The campaign’s goal is to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries by encouraging the use of seatbelts while driving. “During the Click It or Ticket campaign, we’ll be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across the state to ensure the message gets out to drivers and passengers to buckle up,” said Sheriff L. Paul Bailey. “We cannot overstate the importance of wearing a seat

Lawmaker wants to create a marijuana blood-level limit for drivers

Based on the total body of knowledge presently available, the commission finds there is no scientifically supported threshold of (THC) bodily content that would be indicative of impaired driving due to the fact that there is a poor correlation between driving impairment and the blood (plasma) levels of (THC) at the time of blood collection, the  Impaired Driving Safety Commission wrote in its final report, issued in 2019.  Recreational marijuana is legal in Michigan, and it s already illegal to drive while intoxicated in the state. But marijuana intoxication is not defined in the same way as alcohol intoxication; if someone has a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, that person is legally considered too drunk to drive.

Driving behaviors harbor early signals of dementia

E-Mail April 28, 2021 Using naturalistic driving data and machine learning techniques, researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and Columbia s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed highly accurate algorithms for detecting mild cognitive impairment and dementia in older drivers. Naturalistic driving data refer to data captured through in-vehicle recording devices or other technologies in the real-world setting. These data could be processed to measure driving exposure, space and performance in great detail. The findings are published in the journal Geriatrics. The researchers developed random forests models, a statistical technique widely used in AI for classifying disease status, that performed exceptionally well. Based on variables derived from the naturalistic driving data and basic demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, race/ethnicity and education level, we could predict mild cognitive impairment an

GM Confident In Active Safety Technology After U Of M Study

Sponsored Links General Motors partnered with the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute to study the real-world effectiveness of its various available active safety features and found that such systems are “making a statistically significant impact in helping to reduce crashes.” To find out what kind of impact GM’s own active safety, driver assistance and adaptive lighting technologies are having on driver safety, the U of M compiled data from 3.7 million different GM vehicles from 2013-2017 and compared crash instances involving vehicles with and without active safety features. The automaker says the study “showed that certain features evaluated had an impact in preventing the types of crashes the features were designed to help prevent or mitigate,” and indicates such systems are helping to improve road safety.
