Crookston Firefighters Association throws Feiros a surprise party Crookston Times     The Crookston Firefighters Association recently held a surprise retirement party for longtime firefighter Tom Feiro and his family who will be moving out of state.     Feiro was a firefighter in Crookston for 36 years and had his “last hose roll” in June, the CFA announced in a Facebook post.     Tom’s wife, Kim, will also be retiring from her longtime daycare business out of their home when they make the move.     Tom, who received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota Crookston in Environmental and Natural Resource Management, also worked for UMN Crookston for 40 years and was involved in many campus and community projects before his retirement as the Environmental Health & Safety Lab Services Coordinator. Far North Spirits Releases Rye Study that Shows Variety Determines Flavor in Whiskey Far North Spirits Releases Rye Study that Shows Variety Determines Flavor in Whiskey Far North Spirits recently released results from its five-year research initiative that showed rye variety alone contributes to the flavor of the whiskey. The research involved planting, harvesting, fermenting and distilling 15 different varieties of rye, which nearly 200 participants across the U.S. tasted bling as unaged whiskey. Mike Swanson, Far North farmer and head distiller, ran the study with research support from Jochum Wiersma, a small grain specialist from the University of Minnesota Crookston. Swanson wanted to know based on data   if the variety of grain could influence flavor in distilled spirits.
