Merchant & Gould P.C., a national intellectual property law firm is sponsoring a scholarship for Mitchell Hamline School of Law and University of Minnesota Law School students seeking a career in intellectual property law and coming from diverse backgrounds. In addition to providing financial support, the firm wants to create opportunities and experiences for the next generation of Minnesota IP attorneys.
A cash gift of $5,000 merit aid will be awarded annually to students selected by their schools.
“As the legal industry continues to grow, Merchant & Gould is thrilled to enable these law schools to recruit and support more students typically underrepresented in intellectual property law,” said Andrew L. Jagenow, partner and Diversity Committee chair at the firm. “Through the scholarships, we are pleased to give resources to students and, by extension, help make our legal community more diverse, inclusive, and innovative.”

Prosecutors may have secured a conviction against Derek Chauvin, but legal experts say the case against the three other former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd s death is the harder one to prove. Their case isn t a slam dunk by any stretch of the imagination, said Bradford Colbert, a Minnesota public defender and law professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul.
FORT MYERS Southwest Florida resident Jim Hale, a onetime U.S. Supreme Court law clerk and former Target and General Mills Corp. executive, has been named chair of the WGCU Public Media Advisory Board.
Hale, who joined the board of the Southwest Florida PBS and NPR programming entity in 2013, will serve a two-year term as chair, according to a statement. He’s the board’s immediate past vice chair and follows outgoing chair Judy Bricker, the release adds.
Hale, who moved to the region with his wife, Shannon, in 2007, is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Minnesota Law School. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren in 1965-66, the release states, where he “spent a significant amount of this time helping to draft the Miranda opinion.”
