The women are all roommates and wanted to get photos at the Aerial Lift Bridge and in Canal Park. According to Lynne Williams, UMD Director of University Marketing and Public Relations, there are 2,166 undergrads, 226 graduate students and two doctoral students are graduating from UMD this spring. This is the 118th graduation for UMD. The first graduating class was seven women who received their degrees in 1907 from what was then the Duluth Normal School. ELY - Paul Colwell is taking over the reins of the Ely-Winton Historical Society upon the retirement of long-time manager Margaret Sweet.
Colwell, a Texas native, recently moved to this area from Boston, Mass. He said he is very interested in the local history and has made it his priority to learn as much as he can about this area.
Colwell has ample experience with historical research, archive maintenance, community relations, social media communications, and computer work. Additionally, he plans to earn a Museum Studies Certificate from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He and his wife Charlene (nee Haapala) currently live in Babbitt.
Jerrol (Jerry) Conley, age 88, passed away peacefully May 4, 2021, at Christian Community Homes in Hudson, WI. His battle with pancreatic cancer showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Jerry stayed strong until the end.
Jerry was born on December 21, 1932 in Duluth, Minnesota; the son of Floyd and Ellen Conley. He was raised in Wrenshall, Minnesota where he graduated from high school. Following high school, he enlisted in the armed forces where he proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his return, he furthered his education at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he received his degree in education. On August 25, 1956, he was united in marriage to Myrtle âJeanâ Levaque in Cloquet, Minnesota. This union would be blessed with four children. Sadly, Jean would precede him in death in in 2012. Jerryâs passion in life was helping people. Everyone who came in contact with him grew from the experience. He
