Microglia, Stockholm syndrome and miraculous cures in glioblastoma patients

University of Minnesota Medical School April 19, 2021 – Despite access to some of the best possible medical care in the world, Senators John McCain and Edward Kennedy both died within 18 months of their diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. While this deadly outcome typifies the nature of this disease, some glioblastoma patients see exceptional benefits from chemotherapy and survive beyond expectations. Why this happens has been revealed by researchers at the University of Minnesota in a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Deciphering the molecular underpinning of these exceptional responses may hold the key to transforming the hope for miracles into the reality of an expected cure for glioblastoma patients,” said Clark C. Chen, MD, PhD, Lyle French Chair in Neurosurgery and head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School, who is also lead author of the study.

Novel gene mutations may help identify patients with a specific form of muscular dystrophy

Novel gene mutations may help identify patients with a specific form of muscular dystrophy New research from the University of Minnesota Medical School found mutations in a novel gene that may help identify patients with a specific form of muscular dystrophy. The laboratory of Peter B. Kang, MD, the new director of the Paul & Sheila Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Center at the U of M Medical School, studies the genetics and disease mechanisms of muscular dystrophy. It uses cutting-edge genomic methods to discover disease-causing mutations in patients who cannot find answers via clinical genetic test facilities. The Kang laboratory and collaborators at the Université Libre de Bruxelles found a novel gene associated with muscular dystrophy and led an international coalition of scientists and physicians to describe a group of 13 families from around the world affected by muscular dystrophy who harbor disease-causing mutations in a gene named

COVID-19 variants and covid fatigue drove Cape Cod s third surge

Cape health officials say a  perfect storm of variants and pandemic fatigue contributed to a third wave of COVID-19 cases that filled area hospital beds and closed the doors of the Cape s largest school system for over a week this spring. By mid-March, the towns of Barnstable and Yarmouth had the highest positivity rates in the state. At one point Barnstable s positivity rate was 10.20% , more than five times the state average. Areas of the Cape continue to remain in the state s highest-risk red zone. While case numbers are dropping, Cape officials fear next week s April school vacation week will create another surge as families travel and visit with friends and relatives.
