December 21, 2020 Mental health experts are now concerned this holiday season may be rough for some people. A national survey found that out of the 20,000 people surveyed, more than half reported they sometimes or always feel alone. Adding the impacts of the pandemic may only heighten that feeling. Mental health professionals say it’s important to recognize the possibility of loneliness as social connections is a basic human need and can be essential for coping. “Yes, we do have restrictions for social contact right now, and is crucial for reducing infection rates. It makes it more difficult to be together, but it is important to stay connected in ways that we can,” said Sabine Schmid, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
