Joellen Shendy spent 29 years in higher education administration, so she knows well the pain an adverse weather event can bring to a university’s on-premises operations. If a looming blizzard delayed the start of a term when she served as registrar for the University of Maryland Global Campus near Washington, DC, Shendy would have to dispatch a squad of staffers to manually change the start date of each of many thousands of course sections. “There wasn’t a way to uniformly change the date all at once,” says Shendy. “That time spent was replicated over many areas. To say it was painful doesn’t begin to cover it.”

ADELPHI, Md. â Gregory Fowler grew up in Albany, one of eight children. His mother was a secondary school teacher, and other family members included ministers and pastors.
Fowler realized from an early age the power of education and the need to engage with people and help them wherever they are in life. These lessons have driven his success as a distinguished scholar, faculty member and innovative administrator during his 25-year career in higher education.
Based on that extensive track record of leadership in helping students succeed, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents announced recently that Fowler has been selected as the next president of University of Maryland Global Campus. He will begin his new position on Jan. 4.

The University of Maryland Board of Regents on Wednesday appointed Gregory Fowler as the new president for The University of Maryland Global Campus. He will begin his term on Jan. 4.

Fowler has been the president of Southern New Hampshire University Global Campus since 2018, and he was the chief academic officer and vice president for academic affairs for the institution years prior.
While Fowler was president, SNHU partnered with the Thurgood Marshall Fund, the Kresge Foundation and Delaware State University to create a program using online education for near-completers, or students who started a degree but did not finish, at historically black colleges and universities. He has also helped more military and industry-certified students access academic credit.
