47 ABC – Delaware State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore each received historic donations from MacKenzie Scott, a philanthropist and the ex-wife of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
DSU and UMES are among 384 organizations across the country, including 16 other historically black institutions, which collectively will benefit from 4.15 billion dollars in the latest round of donations from Scott.
In a lengthy online posting, Scott wrote the, “384 carefully selected teams have dedicated their lives to helping others, working and volunteering and serving real people face-to-face at bedsides and tables, in prisons and courtrooms and classrooms, on streets and hospital wards and hotlines and frontlines of all types and sizes, day after day after day.”

Morgan State University on Tuesday announced the receipt of a $40 million gift from billionaire philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott.
The gift is the largest single private donation in the historically Black institution s history and the second-largest to any public university in Maryland. The unrestricted gift will be used to support student success, advance research and enhance investments in top priorities and initiatives.
“This monumental gift will change lives and shape futures. More than five decades after she faced off with armed National Guardsmen during protests over segregation, Gloria Richardson watched as outrage over the death of George Floyd prompted thousands to take to the streets.
The civil rights fighter was angry the nation had not made more progress since she helped lead a racial justice uprising on Maryland s Eastern Shore in the 1960s. But the news images from across the country also sparked hope: While the protesters who had joined her were predominantly Black, she watched a mix of races, all marching together to continue their work.
