UWA awarded $6 million for groundbreaking medical research
A medical trial to improve diagnosis in cancers with low survival rates and a project to investigate the genetic causes of neurological disorders in older patients are two research projects at The University of Western Australia to be awarded $6 million in Federal Government funding.
The projects, announced by Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt, are funded through the Medical Research Future Fund.
Lead investigator Professor Nigel Laing AO, from UWA and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and his team, will receive $3 million to investigate the genetic causes of neurological disorders including ataxias, where patients lack muscle control or coordination of voluntary movements, such as speaking, eye movement, swallowing or walking.

The Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program provides grants of up to $15,000 to community organisations such as libraries, archives, museums, genealogical and historical societies, multicultural and Indigenous groups. The grants are provided to assist with the preservation of locally owned, but nationally significant collections of materials that are publicly accessible including artefacts, letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and audio visual material.
In 2019, 60 grants were awarded, totalling $378,440.

Auroch Minerals strengthens exploration skillset with new appointment

Auroch Minerals Ltd (ASX:AOU) has appointed Mathew McCarthy, an accomplished geologist with more than 20 years’ experience, as exploration manager effective from today.
According to the company, the appointment will strengthen the exploration team at a time when it plans to ramp up exploration at Nepean Deeps along with the recently announced drilling program for South Australia.
