Australia’s vaccine rollout is moving far more slowly than the government had hoped, and there is evidence of vaccine hesitancy in a significant part of the population.
Some governments and media outlets are already considering whether mandates will be needed to reach sufficient vaccine coverage.
Last year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison briefly suggested a vaccine would be mandatory before walking it back hours later.
Supply and rollout problems must clearly be solved first. But if mandates do come back on the table in the face of vaccine hesitancy, our research sheds light on how widely supported they would be.

73% Australians support mandatory Covid vaccination Wednesday, May 12, 2021 IWK Bureau
Seventy-three per cent of Australians would support a mandatory Covid-19 vaccination for work, study, and travel, a survey conducted by two universities revealed on Tuesday.
The survey was conducted by the University of Western Australia (UWA) and Sydney University, reports Xinhua news agency.
Researchers surveyed 1,200 people and found more people advocating for mandatory vaccination, compared to 66 per cent who will take a jab voluntarily.
The survey found 25 per cent of Australians were unsure about taking the vaccine, while 70 per cent were concerned that the jabs may have been developed too quickly.
