Pensacola: Centuries of History and Plenty of Family Fun

Pensacola: Centuries of History and Plenty of Family Fun The westernmost city in Florida’s Panhandle, Pensacola is barely located within the Sunshine State it’s hours from hotspots such as Disney World, South Beach, or the Florida Keys but it’s a perfectly Floridian destination nonetheless. In fact, part of Pensacola’s appeal is the fact that it straddles the border of Alabama, part of Florida on paper, and yet is closer to the small Southern town of Mobile than any of the world-famous tourist attractions within its own state. Pensacola is a place where you can get away from it all, where the sand gleams as white as sugar and the water sparkles like emeralds. There are centuries of history, beaches galore, and lots of outdoor activities, so it’s especially beloved by families and couples.

Freezing cold temperatures in Escambia, Santa Rosa may cause black ice

Schools will be closed Tuesday in both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties as emergency management officials on Monday afternoon were preparing for freezing cold temperatures overnight that could leave roadways and bridges covered in dangerous black ice. We expect temperatures to drop significantly tonight, potentially into the low to mid 20s, even along the coast, said Brandon Black, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, on Monday afternoon. So with temperatures like that, any spots with standing water will likely freeze. And that s how we get black ice.   Winds are forecast to sweep through the area Monday evening ahead of the cold front, and if they are strong enough, they could evaporate standing water from Monday morning s thunderstorms and prevent ice from forming, Black said. But in the event that standing water does freeze, officials in both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties are proceeding with an abundance of caution.

State OKs Wentworth Museum Name Change

Credit UWF Downtown Pensacola’s T.T. Wentworth Museum is one step closer to a new name, after receiving the state’s blessing to change it. The Florida Historical Commission approved changing the museum’s name to the Pensacola Museum of History at the University of West Florida.  “The board voted to authorize me to reach out to the state Historic Preservation officer, to see if we could get before the Florida Historical Commission to request the name be changed, that happened,” said Rob Overton, who oversees the UWF Historic Trust. “I drafted the letter, and the Historical Commission met Friday, Feb. 5,” Overton said. “I participated in that meeting; it was an agenda item that they had [under] new business. They stated our request, fielded some questions, a good bit of discussion, and the Historical Commission approved our request.”
