Recognizing diversity is an essential element of academic excellence, the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is offering Equity and Inclusion scholarships to students whose academic achievement and varied experiences will enhance and enrich the education of all UMA students and the institution’s educational mission.
Equity and Inclusion Scholars may receive up to four years of funding, provided they continuously enroll each fall and spring semester in either full or part-time study in a graduate or undergraduate program and maintain the minimum GPA requirements of the scholarship.
“We are excited to provide this new scholarship opportunity,” said UMA President Rebecca Wyke, in a news release. “This continues UMA’s long-standing reputation as a welcoming learning community.”

Submissions from makers and writers are sought for the annual Plunkett Maine Poetry Festival, a hybrid event of visual and literary arts to be held on Friday, April 30. Literary and art submissions are due Monday, March 1. Anyone interested in contributing one or more creative works to the festival should visit uma.edu/plunkett for details.
The past year has been challenging, with quarantining, masking, “pivoting,” rising up, breaking down and trying to keep it together. To mark the events, the Plunkett Maine Poetry Festival will Break Out of its usual format to celebrate the University of Maine at Augusta’s 2020-2021 academic theme of “Outbreak,” a topic inclusive of viral outbreaks, outbreaks of social justice and outbreaks of creativity.

AUGUSTA After four decades of service to United Way of Kennebec Valley, Director of Finance Wendy Beaudoin has announced her plans to retire from the organization in March. UWKV has hired Kelly Wasson as the organization’s incoming director of finance, effective Feb. 1.

Beaudoin joined United Way in 1981 as a administrative assistant, and her position has evolved with the nonprofit’s needs. Over the course of her career, she helped United Way grow from a two-person operation raising $298,000 to four-person staff raising $1.66 million and serving 57,534 people in 2020, the highest amount in the organization’s 65-year history.
