Professor Sampath Amaratunge, the Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) explained the removal of the monument in the University of Jaffna.
The said monument was erected around 2018 and the removal took place as it can be an obstacle for peace in South and North, Professor Amarathunga explained. The decision of the removal was made by Professor Sri Sadgunaraja, the Vice Chancellor of Jaffna University yesterday evening (08).
Professor Amaratunge further stated “We do not want war memorials but peace monuments.”

A Tamil war memorial in Jaffna University was destroyed by the authorities in Sri Lanka, triggering protests by students and community groups and evoking strong reactions from Indian leaders who termed the incident as a big shock.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jaffna Professor Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah ordered the removal of the monument on Friday night amid heavy police presence.
The monument was established in 2019 in the University of Jaffna in memory of the civilian Tamils killed in Mullivaikkal in one of the bloody episodes of the island nation s last leg of the three-decade old conflict in 2009.
Tamil groups accused the government of destroying the war memorial to remember the Tamils. They said that the military bulldozed the memorial using heavy machinery, terming it a high-handed political act to hurt Tamil sentiments.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, his deputy O Panneerselvam, opposition leader M K Stalin and leaders of various political parties on Saturday condemned the demolition of the memorial established on the premises of the University of Jaffna in memory of the Tamils who died in the civil war in the island nation.
The monument, which was established in 2019 at the university, was razed down during the late hours of Friday. The shocking incident took place just two days after external affair minister S Jaishankar’s visit to the neighbouring country. He was in Sri Lanka for three days and left for India on Thursday.

I am indeed happy to be here with you in Vavuniya. My earliest association with this campus was when I contested for the post of Vice Chancellor in the year 2002. At that time itself I proposed that you be made a university. I did the same in 2005 and again in 2011. Along the way Dr. Krishnakumar your then Dean, and this proud author, Dr. Jeyaseelan and your union backed my candidature. The community and the Vanni MPs too backed my candidature. I am most grateful. I hope this soon becomes a university.
